Restarting wind turbines after icing: process and system

Ice detection systems enable wind farm operators to run their turbines efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations during the winter months and in cold climate regions, without significant yield losses. In this article, we explain what the benefits of our :RESTART ICE are and how the restart process of a wind turbine works.

Restarting wind turbines after blade icing

Rotor blades are one of the most critical components of a wind turbine. Especially in regions with temperatures below 3°C, ice can accumulate on the blade surface. This not only impacts the efficiency and operation of the turbines. It also poses a safety risk for people and the environment. Large chunks of ice, sometimes weighing several kilograms, can detach from the blades during turbine operation, result in ice throw or ice fall.

Advanced ice detection systems such as our :RESTART ICE help operators detect icing early and ensure safe and efficient turbine operation. Equipped with our ON-BLADE technology, :RESTART ICE measures directly on the rotor blade surface. If ice is detected, the system sends an “ice build-up” signal to the turbine control system and stops the turbine. The ice then falls off the stationary or slow-moving blades, preventing dangerous ice throw. Only when the system confirms that the blades are “ice-free” can the turbine be restarted manually or through an automatic restart process.

The role of the :RESTART ICE system

The :RESTART ICE system simplifies turbine operation by enabling automatic restart. Thanks to its innovative ON-BLADE technology, it provides highly precise ice detection directly on the rotor blade surface.

The system utilizes multiple flexible sensors that are self-powered via an integrated solar panel and continuously transmit measurement data to a central base station. Unlike our :STANDARD ICE system, :RESTART ICE has a higher number of sensors. This is essential to ensure accurate measurements, which is required to trigger the restart signal. The sensors are redundant and therefore fail-safe. This prevents unnecessary downtimes or misdiagnoses.

The sensors of the :RESTART ICE system detect the surface condition of the rotor blades in different levels:

5 levels of ice accumulation

5 levels of ice accumulation

Based on these measurements, the system sends a signal to either shut down or restart the wind turbine.

Advantages of the :RESTART ICE System

  • Reliable detection of critical ice mass
  • Seamless integration into existing systems without altering the turbine’s operational and safety framework
  • High reliability and safety performance
  • Eliminates the need for manual inspections
  • Enables turbines to operate automatically even under icy conditions
  • DNV and TUEV certified

Conclusion

The safe and efficient operation of wind turbines in cold regions requires a reliable ice detection system. The :RESTART ICE system not only provides highly accurate ice detection but also enables fully automated turbine restart as soon as the blades are ice-free. This enhances operational safety, minimizes unnecessary downtime, and ensures optimal production. Investing in a modern ice detection system is not just a safety measure – it is a strategic investment in the longevity and profitability of wind turbines.
