Ice detection for wind turbines: comparison of two different systems

Ice detection for wind turbines is essential. However, there are significant differences between systems. This case study compares two systems and highlights the differences in their results.

How do different ice detection systems perform under real winter conditions?

In this case study, we compare the results of two systems across two winters:

  • Winter 2022/23: EOLOGIX-PING ON-BLADE system controlled stopped and restarted the turbine when ice was detected, while the OEM system monitored.
  • Winter 2024/25: The roles were reversed. The OEM system controlled, while EOLOGIX-PING monitored.

For each period, three events are analyzed in detail, showing how often each system actually stopped the turbine and how often the monitoring system would have triggered a stop signal.

The results reveal significant differences and highlight the potential impact of each system on energy production and ice-related downtime.
